Yelagiri Travel Guide – Places to Visit, Itinerary, Budget & Travel Tips

Yelagiri is a small hill station in Tamil Nadu, located in the Eastern Ghats, and is a good option for a short and peaceful getaway. It is known for its moderate climate, basic attractions, and less crowded environment compared to other popular hill stations.

Located a few hours from Chennai, Yelagiri is commonly visited for weekend trips. The road journey includes a series of hill bends, and the area has greenery, viewpoints, and a cooler climate than the city. It is suitable for a 1–2 day trip with friends, family, or even a solo visit.

My Journey to Yelagiri

I discovered Yelagiri while searching for a nearby hill station from Chennai that could be covered in a short trip. Planning a 2‑day weekend getaway, I decided to take a road trip, which turned out to be one of the best parts of the journey.

The drive was smooth and enjoyable, especially as the roads began to wind up the hills, offering beautiful views along the way. Reaching Yelagiri, the weather was pleasantly cool, making it a perfect break from the city heat. The entire trip felt relaxing and refreshing, and the peaceful surroundings made it an ideal weekend destination.

It was truly an amazing experience, and Yelagiri proved to be a hidden gem for a quick and scenic getaway.

Places to Visit in Yelagiri

Yelagiri offers a mix of nature, light adventure, temples, and relaxed sightseeing, making it ideal for a short 1–2 day trip. The attractions are not very crowded, and most places are located close to each other, so you can explore comfortably without rushing.

Punganoor Lake and Park – This is the main attraction in Yelagiri and a good place to start your trip. The lake is suitable for boating, and the surrounding park has walking paths, seating areas, and small food stalls. It’s a convenient spot to spend some relaxed time, especially in the evening.

Swamimalai Hill Trek – This is the highest point in Yelagiri (around 4,338 ft) and one of the best experiences here. The trek is about 3 km and moderately easy, making it suitable for beginners as well. Once you reach the top, you get clear views of the surrounding hills and valleys, especially in the morning.

Yelagiri Nature Park (Herbal Garden) – Located close to Punganoor Lake, this park is well maintained and ideal for a short visit. It includes herbal plants, landscaped gardens, a musical fountain, and a small aquarium. It’s a simple place but good for a calm walk.

Jalagamparai Waterfalls – Situated about 14 km from Yelagiri, this waterfall is seasonal and best visited after the monsoon. The route to reach it is scenic, and the area is quiet compared to the main town. It’s a good spot if you want to explore beyond the central area.

Adventure Sports Zone – For those interested in activities, this area offers options like paragliding, ziplining, ATV rides, wall climbing, and bungee trampoline. These are usually operated by local providers and are suitable for groups or friends looking for something different.

Velavan (Murugan) Temple – This temple is located on a small hill and is known for its peaceful surroundings. It is a simple place but offers nice views, especially during sunset. It’s a good stop if you want a short break from sightseeing.

Jalagandeeswarar Temple – Located near Jalagamparai Waterfalls, this is an old Shiva temple visited by locals. It is usually combined with the waterfall visit and adds a cultural element to your trip.

Nilavoor Lake & Tribal Area – This is a quieter alternative to Punganoor Lake. The area has fewer tourists and gives a more local feel. Nearby villages are known for small farms, local produce like jackfruit, and a simple rural lifestyle.

Summer Festival Grounds (May Only) – If you visit in May, you can attend the Yelagiri Summer Festival organized by Tamil Nadu Tourism. It includes flower shows, cultural programs, and food stalls, making it a lively time to visit.

What to Eat in Yelagiri

Yelagiri doesn’t have a very elaborate food scene, but you can still enjoy simple South Indian meals, local snacks, and a few street‑style options. Most food here is basic, fresh, and suitable for a short trip.

South Indian Meals (Idli, Dosa, Meals) – The most common and reliable food option in Yelagiri is traditional South Indian cuisine. You’ll easily find idli, dosa, vada, pongal, and full meals with sambar and chutney in small restaurants around the town. These are affordable and good for breakfast or lunch.

Parotta & Local Tamil Nadu Dishes – Local eateries also serve parotta with salna, chicken curry, and egg dishes. These are simple but filling options, especially for dinner after a day of sightseeing.

Street Food & Snacks – Near the lake area and main town, you’ll find small stalls selling bajji, bonda, fried snacks, noodles, and fried rice. These are popular in the evening when the weather is cooler.

Tea, Coffee & Refreshments – Since Yelagiri has a cooler climate, tea and coffee stalls are quite common. A hot cup of tea with snacks in the evening is a simple but nice experience here.

Local Fruits & Homemade Products – You may come across stalls selling fresh fruits like jackfruit, honey, and herbal products from nearby villages. These are worth trying if you want a local touch.

Small Cafés & Resorts – Some resorts and cafés offer multi‑cuisine food including North Indian and basic Chinese dishes. These are good options if you prefer more variety or a comfortable dining setup.
