Pulicat – A Peaceful Coastal Escape Near Chennai
With a hidden beach, flying flamingos, and a surprise sunset spot
If you’re craving a quick escape from city chaos without traveling too far, Pulicat (also known as Pazhaverkadu) is a hidden gem just a couple of hours from Chennai. Known for its serene backwaters, historical significance, and the famous Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, this coastal town promises tranquility and charm in equal measure.
My One-Day Trip to Pulicat – 22nd September 2024
It was a Saturday morning, 22nd September last year, when I decided to head out for a short solo trip to Pulicat. The plan was simple: breathe, explore, and return the same day.
I started my car from Chennai around 7:00 AM, with a comforting sip of tea in hand and that familiar excitement of a spontaneous road trip. The roads were pleasant and traffic-free early in the morning, making the drive smooth and calming.
Upon reaching Pulicat, I was greeted by calm backwaters and a quiet village vibe. I found a local boatman (Anna) who offered a ride across the lake. The cost was ₹2000 for a single boat, regardless of how many people – so it’s ideal whether you’re solo or in a group.
As we sailed into the lake, I spotted flamingos flying gracefully over the water – a surreal moment I’ll never forget. The boat cut through the silence as we moved to the opposite side of the lake, where a hidden beach with red sands awaited.
The place was almost deserted, just the sound of the waves and occasional bird calls. The boatman suggested I take a walk and said he would wait. I walked along the soft sands, soaked in the stillness, and let the fresh, clean lake breeze recharge my soul.
⚠️ Note: The lake looks calm, but it’s very deep. Be careful if you’re stepping into the water. After spending about an hour there, I returned to the boat and he dropped me back. Luckily, parking was easy and completely free, with no crowds or hassles.
Bonus Stop – N4 Beach, Ennore
Since I had time and energy left, I took a small detour to N4 Beach in Ennore to catch the sunset.
Let me tell you – this place is underrated! Located near the fishing harbour, N4 Beach offers raw, rustic beauty. The golden light of the setting sun lit up the horizon, waves crashed gently on the shore, and I stood there watching the day melt into orange skies.
It was the perfect end to a peaceful getaway.
