Matheran is a unique hill station in Maharashtra, located near Pune and Mumbai, known for its vehicle-free environment, forest trails, scenic viewpoints, and colonial charm. Unlike other hill stations, no private vehicles are allowed beyond Dasturi Car Point, making it one of the most peaceful and eco-sensitive destinations in India.
With red mud pathways, dense forests, toy train tracks, and panoramic viewpoints, Matheran offers a perfect digital detox and a refreshing weekend escape. Whether you’re planning a monsoon road trip or a short hill station getaway, Matheran delivers a calm yet adventurous experience close to the city.
My Journey to Matheran
While searching for places to visit near Pune, we decided to plan a spontaneous weekend trip to Matheran, a popular vehicle-free hill station near Pune and Mumbai.
Around midnight, our group of six started the road trip and reached Dasturi Car Point early in the morning. This is the last motorable point before entering Matheran, as private vehicles are not allowed inside the town to protect the environment.
After parking the car, we walked toward the main market area. Since online hotel availability in Matheran is limited, especially during weekends, we checked 2–3 hotels on the way and finalized one that suited our group. We checked in, had dinner at the hotel, and rested, as we were tired from the overnight journey.
The next morning, we started early to explore the famous viewpoints and walking trails in Matheran. The red mud pathways and forest routes are the main way to move around since there are no vehicles inside the hill station.
While returning to the hotel, we accidentally took a wrong route.
There was no mobile network, no GPS access, and no proper lighting. The forest trail became darker and unfamiliar. There were no other tourists around, and for some time, we could not find the correct direction back to the main path.
After walking for a while, we saw a local man riding a horse. Since horse rides are common in Matheran, we followed him toward the main route and finally reached a familiar path safely.
Later in the evening, we explored the local market area, shopped for small souvenirs, and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the hill station.
One thing we were excited about but unfortunately missed was the Matheran Toy Train. Due to timing issues and lack of proper planning, we could not take the toy train ride during our visit.
Overall, the trip to Matheran was memorable not just for the viewpoints and forest walks, but also for the experience of navigating a vehicle-free hill station without network connectivity. It highlighted the importance of planning routes in advance when visiting Matheran.
