Exploring the Serenity of Lachen – A Hidden Gem in North Sikkim
Tucked away in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas, Lachen is a quaint mountain village in North Sikkim that feels like a dream. The lush green valleys, serene rivers, and snow-capped peaks created a picture-perfect landscape that made the journey totally worth it. This blog covers how I reached Lachen, places to visit, stay options, food, budget, tips, and why this peaceful hamlet deserves a spot on your travel list.

As we left Gangtok in the early morning, the road curved through dense forests, tiny villages, and endless stretches of nature. We stopped at several waterfalls, including the popular Seven Sisters Waterfall and Naga Waterfall, perfect for photo breaks.
We reached Lachen by late evening, just in time to enjoy a hot cup of tea with a view of the fog-kissed valley. The air was crisp, clean, and calming.

- Distance from Gangtok to Lachen: ~120 km

Note: You need a special permit to visit North Sikkim, which most local travel agencies help arrange.

Arrival in Lachen (by 4–5 PM):
Lachen is a peaceful Himalayan village at 9,000 ft altitude. After check-in at your homestay/hotel, take some rest, sip hot tea, and enjoy the view of the snow-covered peaks. The evening is mostly spent indoors due to the cold and limited electricity.
Dinner:
Simple vegetarian or egg meal (dal, rice, veg curry, papad, and pickle). Non-veg is possible if requested earlier.
Sleep early, as Day 2 starts before sunrise.
Day 2: Gurudongmar Lake Excursion + Return
Start: 4:00–4:30 AM (very early!)
Destination: Gurudongmar Lake via Thangu Valley
After a quick tea and breakfast (mostly packed), begin the drive to one of the highest lakes in the world.
Key Stops:
- Thangu Valley (13,000 ft): First halt around 6:30 AM. Breathtaking alpine valley with tea stalls and yak pastures. Spend 15–20 minutes to acclimatize.
- Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft): Arrive by 8:00–8:30 AM. The lake is sacred to both Buddhists and Sikhs and offers surreal views with crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by barren snow mountains. Stay for around 30–40 minutes.
- Tip: Walk slowly, avoid running—oxygen levels are low at this altitude. Carry popcorn or chocolates to deal with lightheadedness.
Return to Lachen:
Begin descent by 9:30 AM and reach your hotel by 12:30 PM. Freshen up, eat lunch (mostly basic) and prepare to leave.
You can then either:
- Proceed to Lachung for the Yumthang Valley circuit (most common), or
