Kashid & Murud

Kashid & Murud – A Hidden Coastal Retreat Just a Road Trip Away from Pune

🚗 My Travel Story

It all began with a casual conversation with my neighbour, who mentioned this peaceful beach town called Kashid and the historic Murud-Janjira Fort. Until then, I had no idea such a beautiful place existed just a few hours from Pune. Intrigued and restless for a new destination, I planned a quick road trip over the weekend.

As I drove through winding roads and green hills, stopping at small villages for a hot vada pav and chai, I felt the pace of the city melting away. My first stop was Murud-Janjira Fort, a majestic sea fortress that can only be accessed by a short boat ride across the water. It was an adventure to cross over, and the sight of the fort rising from the sea was absolutely surreal. The next day was all about soaking in Kashid’s calm beach vibes before heading back to Pune with a head full of stories and a heart full of peace.

Places to Visit

In Kashid :

Kashid Beach – Famous for its pristine white sands and clear blue waters, Kashid Beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or simply lazing under a coconut tree. It’s less crowded than Alibaug, making it an ideal spot to unwind.

Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary – Nestled between Murud and Kashid, this lesser-known sanctuary is a hidden gem for nature lovers and bird watchers. Spread across a lush green area of over 50 sq. km, it’s home to leopards, barking deer, giant squirrels, and over 200 species of birds and butterflies. Ideal for a morning trek or peaceful jungle walk.

Revdanda Fort & Beach – This offbeat destination combines history and serenity. The fort, partly in ruins, opens up to a calm and uncrowded beach, perfect for photographers and explorers looking for a raw coastal vibe.

Datta Mandir Hilltop – Located atop a hill near Kashid, this temple not only holds spiritual importance but also rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the beach and surrounding greenery. A great sunset spot.

Korlai Fort & Lighthouse – A short drive from Kashid, this Portuguese-era fort is perched on a rocky hill by the sea. Climb to the top for a spectacular 360-degree view of the Arabian Sea and explore the nearby lighthouse for a serene, breezy experience.

In Murud :

Murud-Janjira Fort – A majestic fort built on an island in the Arabian Sea, only accessible by a short boat ride. Known for its indestructible architecture and unique design, it houses ancient cannons, secret passages, freshwater tanks, and rich maritime history.

Murud Beach – A peaceful beach ideal for morning walks, horse rides, or catching a quiet sunset. The long, flat shoreline and calm waves make it perfect for couples and families alike.

Ahmedganj Palace – A beautiful 19th-century palace that showcases a mix of French and Mughal architecture. Though privately owned, the exterior can be viewed, and it adds a regal charm to the Murud landscape.

Garambi Waterfalls – Best visited during the monsoon, this small yet scenic waterfall is surrounded by forest. It’s a refreshing detour for nature lovers and a great picnic spot for those visiting with friends or family.

Dattatreya Temple – Located on a quiet hilltop, this small temple offers a serene environment for prayers and reflection. The view of the coastline from the temple area is a hidden highlight that many visitors miss.

What to Eat

In Kashid :

Home-style Fish Thali (Pomfret/Bangda) – A must-try when in Kashid! This comforting meal usually includes freshly caught fish (either fried or curried), rice, chapati, chutney, and sometimes a vegetable or solkadhi. Most local homes and small eateries serve it with authentic Konkani flavors.

Solkadhi – Made with cooling kokum and creamy coconut milk, this pink-hued drink is both a digestive and a refreshing escape from the coastal heat. Served with meals or sipped solo, it’s a staple in every Konkan household.

Vada Pav & Kanda Bhaji from Beach Stalls – Crunchy and spicy, these quick bites are perfect for a beachside snack. Grab a hot vada pav with fiery chutney or a plate of onion fritters (kanda bhaji) while watching the waves roll in.

Tender Coconut Water & Maggi by the Sea – Simple pleasures! Nothing beats sipping sweet coconut water after a swim, or enjoying a hot plate of buttery Maggi at one of the beachside shacks, especially during cooler evenings.

Modak (If Visiting During Ganesh Season) – Soft, steamed rice flour dumplings filled with jaggery and coconut—ukadiche modak is a sweet delicacy often served as prasad, especially in the Ganesh Chaturthi season.

In Murud :

Surmai or Bombil Fry – Crisp, shallow-fried kingfish (surmai) or Bombay duck (bombil) marinated in regional spices—served hot with lemon wedges and onions. A seafood lover’s delight that’s available at almost every local restaurant.

Malvani Chicken Curry with Rice Bhakri – A spicy coconut-based chicken curry loaded with traditional Malvani masala. Paired with rice bhakri (a soft rice flour flatbread), it’s hearty, flavorful, and deeply satisfying.

Prawn Sukka (Dry Masala Prawns) – Juicy prawns cooked in dry coconut masala, garlic, and red chilies. Best enjoyed with chapati or solkadhi, this dish bursts with traditional Konkani heat and flavor.

Local Alphonso Mango Desserts (Seasonal) – If you’re lucky enough to visit in mango season (April–June), indulge in mango sheera, aamras, or even homemade mango ice cream served at local sweet shops or homestays.

Seafood Platter at Patil Khanaval or Local Eateries – A mix of fried fish, prawn curry, clams (tisrya), and rice, all prepared in homely Konkani style. Places like Patil Khanaval are known for serving authentic, fresh seafood thalis at budget-friendly prices.

Extra Travel Tips

  • Start Early: Begin your journey from Pune early in the morning—ideally by 5:30 or 6 AM. This not only helps you skip city traffic but also gives you more time to enjoy scenic spots en route like Tamhini Ghat and Mulshi Lake, and reach the coast well in time for lunch.
  • Sun Protection Essentials: Whether you’re traveling in summer or winter, the coastal sun can be intense. Carry sunscreen, a cap or hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes. Also, pack light cotton clothes and stay hydrated.
  • Don’t Miss Janjira Fort Boat Ride: The boat ride to Murud-Janjira Fort is a highlight of the trip. It’s not just about the fort but the experience of sailing into the Arabian Sea. Try to go earlier in the day when the water is calmer, and don’t forget your camera!
  • Taste the Local Flavors: Indulge in authentic Malvani cuisine at local eateries and homestays—especially the seafood thalis, solkadhi, and seasonal Alphonso mango desserts (during summer). Even the vada pav stalls near the beach offer a burst of flavor.
  • Book Your Stay in Advance: Both Kashid and Murud get busy on weekends, long holidays, and during the Ganesh festival season. To avoid last-minute stress and get the best beach-facing rooms or homestays, make your reservations in advance, especially if you’re traveling with family.
  • Keep Essentials Handy: Carry a power bank, cash (ATMs are limited), mosquito repellent, and a basic first aid kit. Mobile network can be patchy in some areas, so download maps offline if needed.
  • Kashid and Murud offer a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration. Whether you’re looking to unwind on pristine beaches, explore historical forts, or indulge in authentic Malvani food, this weekend getaway is sure to leave you with lasting memories.
